The Storkyrkan
The Storkyrkan, also known as the Church of St. Nicholas, is located in the heart of Gamla Stan (Stockholm’s Old Town). This historic church captivates visitors with its architecture and rich history. Built in the 14th century, it exemplifies Gothic style. The church’s interior boasts intricate paintings, sculptures, and stained glass windows. Its most distinctive feature is the slender tower that gracefully rises above the surrounding streets—so tall that it almost didn’t fit within my widest angle lens frame!
Among its treasures, the main altar stands out as a masterpiece of art. Another eye-catching work is the impressive sculpture depicting Saint George battling the dragon. Symbolizing courage, valor, and the triumph of good over evil, Saint George is portrayed as a knight in full armor, while the fearsome dragon he defeats adds drama to the scene. Additionally, the Nicholas Window, created by German artist Hermann Rode between 1435 and 1442, remains a remarkable example of Gothic art.
And don’t miss the miniature hanging ship suspended above worshippers’ heads. According to tradition, this replica ship was offered to the church by a grateful captain who survived a storm at sea.
Storkyrkan hosts numerous concerts and cultural events. If you’re planning a visit to Stockholm, be sure to reserve time for this exceptional church!
